FOR RELEASE 1 MARCH 2025

Digital Island, now Independent from Spark, entering a new growth era

Auckland, New Zealand – 1 March 2025 – Digital Island, one of New Zealand’s leading specialists in cloud communications and contact centre solutions, announces its divestment from Spark New Zealand.  It will transition to a private ownership structure, led by existing CEO, Leon Sheehan, who will co-invest alongside prominent business entrepreneur, James Reeves.

Digital Island began in 2004 and has operated as a subsidiary of Spark since its acquisition in 2017.  Its focus has been on providing high quality Telecommunications and Collaboration solutions, complemented by a comprehensive Professional and Managed Services practice, to enable a full value proposition for NZ businesses wanting to get more out of their communications systems.  This move marks a significant milestone, enabling Digital Island to sharpen its focus on innovation, agility and client-centric solutions, while continuing to provide outstanding customer service to businesses across Aotearoa.

Leon Sheehan, CEO of Digital Island, stated:

“Digital Island has built a strong reputation over the past two decades by delivering exceptional cloud-based communication and telecommunications services to Kiwi businesses.  We focus on delivering fantastic customer experiences to our clients, as we know how important communications are to NZ companies and I believe there is a real gap in the market where clients are wanting more from technology providers to maximise value.

Our approach is to help clients find the right blend of people, process and technology to solve real problems and to achieve their own customer experience ambitions. With current economic conditions extremely tough, we are seeing many NZ businesses wanting to differentiate their own service models with great CX, however they are concerned about cost implications.  We work with clients to innovate and consider long-term sustainable communication solutions that demonstrate exceptional value.

This transition to a standalone entity allows us to operate with greater agility and to double down on our focus to provide best in class Contact Centre and Cloud Communications solutions, including AI and Technology innovations, coupled with a great Service wrap for clients.  We see tremendous opportunities to strengthen existing relationships while expanding our partner ecosystem and are actively working on new vendor collaborations that will further bolster our proposition – exciting developments are on the horizon, with more news to come.”

Digital Island will continue to be run and operated by the existing management team, including Sheehan who has been CEO for the last 7 years.  Joining Leon is James Reeves, an experienced investor with a career of successful business ventures across NZ, Australia and the US.  Most recently James developed Bay Audiology Australia, having previously grown and sold businesses to OPSM parent, Luxottica Spa, and AMP Wealth Management.  James and Leon are established business executives that have a history of growing organisations and are looking to utilise their expertise to improve CX outcomes for NZ businesses.

Digital Island reassures its clients that its commitment to providing excellent customer service will remain a top priority for the new entity.

The business will continue to develop solutions that empower businesses to enhance customer and employee experiences, improve operational efficiency and future-proof their communications infrastructure.
