PSTN – Price Changes for Business Services, 1 Aug 2020

Voice communication in New Zealand is in for a massive upgrade with Spark New Zealand announcement, in April 2017, the migration of the ageing Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to a next-generation IP-based network.

The new network, being progressively phased in over five years (2017 – 2022), will provide the foundation for Spark’s voice services into the future and will bring together all voice communications – albeit landline, mobile, video or data-based.

The new network is enabling richer, more meaningful customer experiences over voice, video and team collaboration which is particularly relevant in the current new way of working.  It also will be future-proofing technologies for innovative and customer-centric services.

For some customers, this means legacy services such as ISDN Primary Rate, ISDN Basic Rate, Centrex, Global Office and Analogue lines will be progressively shut down by close of the year 2021. The business cost of maintaining these services has increased since the announcement from Spark, with the general theme being progressive cost increases from our service providers. While Digital Island has absorbed these costs so far, it is unsustainable to do so while still providing the high level of customer service our customers expect.

From 1 Aug 2020, the following legacy PSTN services are subject to a 6-8% price increase:
